Purpose
The purpose of lumbar fusion surgery is to create a solid bone between the adjacent vertebrae, eliminating any movement between the bones involved. The goal of surgery is to reduce pain and irritation of the nerves.
During surgery, diseased discs are removed and replaced by spacers, pedicle screws and rods are attached to the back of the vertebrae, and an interbody fusion spacer is inserted into the disc space from one side of the spine. Lumbar fusion surgery has two different approaches. The most common procedure used is the posterior approach, where surgery is performed from the back.
