Understanding Degenerative Disc Issues and Nerve Pain

These conditions can result in nerve compression and impairment, causing significant pain in the neck that may radiate into the arms, hands, shoulders, and chest. This content explores the causes, symptoms, and impacts of these spinal issues on overall health and well-being.

  • Cervical spinal surgery assists in treating neck pain, which occurs due to various reasons. The cervical spine is a sum of seven vertebrae. The disc helps each of these vertebrae to be isolated. These discs allow the spine to be flexible and help us move and bend.
  • The nerves spread out of the spinal cord passes through the openings of the vertebrae to other parts of the body. However, due to age and injury, one or more discs may degenerate into bulge discs or vertebral osteoarthritis.
  • This leads to nerve pain and nerve impairment between the vertebrae, leading to several problems, as shown in the picture, leading to pain in the neck. The pain may even radiate into the arms, hands, shoulder, and also the breast.

Posterior approach

The posterior approach involves accessing the spine from the back, allowing for effective treatment of spinal conditions.

  • Laminectomy
  • Laminectomy with fusion
  • Laminoplasty
  • Foraminoplasty
  • Posterior discectomy
  • Upper cervical fusion

Anterior approach

This technique minimizes disruption to the surrounding muscles and ligaments, leading to quicker recovery. It's commonly used for procedures like discectomy or spinal fusion.

  • Cervical discectomy with or without fusion
  • Corpectomy
  • Disc arthroplasty
  • Transoral approach

Procedure for Cervical spinal surgery

Cervical spine surgery is done primarily through two methods-decompression and fusion. De-compression with cervical fusion surgery requires the surgical removal of the extruded disc that rub against the spinal cord or nerves leading to discomfort or other problems. The approach used for surgery may vary depending on where the tissue is compressed. The method used may be from the front (anterior) or back (posterior) of the spine. The Surgery generally takes 1 to 3 hours.

Who can undergo cervical spinal surgery?

Cervical spine surgery is for people with pain that (radiates) from the neck to the chest, arms and back of the scapula or breast, pain which interferes with daily activity, arms or hand weakness, when all other non surgical management has failed

Expected Results

Most patients may expect a dramatic and lasting improvement from their neck pain and pain in their arms and hands following cervical spinal surgery. Although success rates are excellent in cervical spine surgery, there are scenarios where patients who smoke, overweight, diabetes, or other significant medical conditions like osteoporosis may have different effects.
