Procedure For Hip Fracture Surgery

Usually, The surgery is the only way to treat a hip fracture. The National Institute for Health and Care Quality (NICE) recommends that the hip surgery be done for someone with a hip fracture within 48 hours of hospital admission.

The type of surgery depends on several factors, including

• The type of fracture that occurs in the femur (hip bone).
• Your age..
• Your level of mobility before the hip fracture..
• Bone and joint condition – whether or not you have arthritis..

Most hip fractures need surgery, ideally within a day. The type of surgery depends on various factors.

• The type of fracture you have – where the fracture is in the middle of the thigh or the head of the femur.
• Your age
• How mobile you were before the fracture of the hip
• The ability to engage in the post-operative rehabilitation program
• Muscle or joint condition – whether or not you have arthritis, for example

Internal Fixation

Internal fixation is when pins, screws, nails or plates are used to secure the bone while it is healing. It tends to be used for either:

  • Fracture excluding the head of femur - hip joint socket (extracapsular fracture).
  • Fracture within the femur- hip joint socket (intracapsular fracture) – if it is intact and has not substantially moved (undisplaced)

If an intracapsular fracture is treated conservatively, the patient will have multiple follow-up visits for X-rays to ensure that it heals properly and is in position.

Medical Management

Conservative care is the alternative to surgery. It requires a long period of bed rest and is not often recommended because it may

  • Make people depressed due to prolonged bed rest.
  • Prolonged hospitalization
  • Delayed recovery

However, if the surgery is not possible, conservative treatment is suitable if someone is too weak to cope with surgery.

Results Hip Fracture Surgery

After the fracture of your hip, you will have a tailored rehabilitation program to help you regain your mobility and independence as soon as possible. It has been shown that timely surgery and a successful rehabilitation program shorten the duration of a person's hospital stay and help them recover their mobility rapidly.
